History of Tontines
Tontines became a socially acceptable and widely used investment tool throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. From about 1670 to 1850, the French, Dutch, English, and German governments all established official state tontines. These tontines were organized so that when the last subscriber died, and dividends no longer needed to be paid, the remaining capital reverted to the government. Tontines were thus used to successfully raise federal revenue and fund military operations.
One of the first major tontines was used by Louis XIV to fund military operations in 1689. Unlike other financial schemes at the time, this tontine was run honestly with each initial subscriber investing $6,000 USD. The last remaining survivor was a widow named Charlotte Barbier, who received over $1.46 million USD in her last payment, before passing away at the age of 96.
It is often the case that the capital devolves upon the last survivor, thus dissolving the tontine and usually making the survivor very wealthy. The returns on investment were very high, making tontines very successful financial tools.
From the onset of the system, questionable activities among participants and organizers of tontines have led to investigations. The introduction of tontines often leads to a suspicious rise in deaths among its members. This ultimately leads to tontines being banned from several countries as a government financial tool and they were outlawed in the 18thcentury because of the corruption and mischief they enticed.
Nevertheless, today's modern economy continues to recognize the power and value of tontines. In March 2017, The New York Times reported that tontines were getting fresh consideration as a way for people to get a steady retirement income.
